Santa goes to market

Santa Claus will be visiting farmers' markets this week, handing out island fruits to children.

He'll visit the market at Kapiolani Community College on Wednesday, starting at 8 a.m. (The market -- usually held on Saturdays -- has been moved up to Wednesday this week and next because of the Christmas and New Year's holiday.) Market hours are 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the KCC parking lot.

Santa will also visit the Kailua Thursday Night Market, 5 to 8 p.m. in the Kailua Town Center Parking Garage behind Longs Drug.

Both markets are sponsored by the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation. Call 848-2074.

For several years, Gilman Hu has led a popular series of classes on the Chinese technique of growing narcissus in celebration of the Lunar New Year. His classes at the Academy Art Center run Jan. 8 to Feb. 5.

Music students wanted

Music students statewide are encouraged to enter the annual Mozart Festival competition taking place Jan. 15 at the University of Hawaii Music Department to celebrate the study and performance of music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The event coincides with the anniversary of the famous composer's birthday. He was born on Jan. 26, 1756.

The Oahu Arts Center sponsors the event, featuring performances by students from kindergarten through high school on string, woodwind, brass, piano and percussion instruments, as well as voice.

Audition finalists will compete at a concert at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Doris Duke Theatre. Tickets for the winners' concert are $15, $10 for students. Call 848-7632 for tickets.

For information on the competition, call Michelle Aczon at 623-8334, Ron Hirai at 286-9219, e-mail hirair@hawaii.rr.com or visit www.oahuartscenter.org.

Put your family on TV

Do you believe you have the busiest family in the country?

Talk is cheap. If you can prove it on national TV, producers are looking for families with children (toddlers to teens) to compete against other families in NBC's newest reality show, "America's Busiest Family."

The busiest household in America will receive a cash prize at the end of the series.

If your family's got what it takes, e-mail Americasbusiestfamilies@yahoo.com or go to NBC.com and get busier!

Narcissus classes set

Gilman Hu, "Mr. Narcissus," will present his annual series of New Year workshops on the ancient and once nearly extinct practice of growing narcissus for the Chinese New Year.

The classes will take place Jan. 8 to Feb. 5 at the Academy Art Center, 1111 Victoria St., in preparation for the Lunar New Year celebration on Feb. 9.

Students will learn upright and crab-claw narcissus culture on five consecutive Saturdays, with a choice of morning sessions, 8:30 to 11:30, or afternoon sessions, 1 to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $35 for new students and $25 for returning students.

Call 532-8742.

The workshops are offered in conjunction with the annual Narcissus Exhibition in the courtyards of the Honolulu Academy of Arts, running Feb. 12 and 13, and including bonsai demonstrations and displays by the Hawaii Bonsai Association.
