Lajola eliminated from tennis tournament

Dennis Lajola of Aiea lost his quarterfinal match at the Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship yesterday in Key Biscayne, Fla.

Lajola, a student at the Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida, fell to second-seeded Philip Bester of Canada 6-3, 6-2 in the boys 16 tournament.

Vulcans clamp down on Rio Grande

Brian Graham scored 20 points and Osadonor Esene added in 17 as UH Hilo defeated Rio Grande 91-67 behind a big second-half performance at the Coconut Coast Classic at Kekua'okalani Gym in Kailua-Kona.

Up 48-38 at halftime, the Vulcans held Rio Grande to just 29 second-half points. The Vulcans shot 49 percent from the field while holding Rio Grande to just 34 percent. Hilo made seven of 15 3-point attempts but struggled from the free-throw line, converting just 18 of 32.

The Vulcans (6-1) face Westminster today.

Local duo second in racquetball

Rodney Felton and Scott Bauman finished second in the open division at the National One Wall Outdoor Doubles Championship of racquetball.

Felton also placed third in the masters division in the tournament held Dec. 10-12 in Hollywood, Fla.

Iolani looking for high school coaches

Iolani School is looking to fill positions for girls volleyball and boys and girls water polo coaches for the 2005-06 school year.
