Police have arrested a 32-year-old Waianae man suspected of killing a bicyclist in a Monday hit-and-run accident.
At about 5:03 p.m. Monday, a 17-year-old male from Waianae was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk along Farrington Highway near Mailiili Road when a 2003 Chevy Tahoe swerved off the road and collided with him.
Police said the Tahoe hit a metal railing and ended up in a ditch.
The Tahoe driver tried to help the victim, but fled the scene using a bicycle that he took from across the street, police said. The suspect later abandoned the bike and was seen running down Farrington Highway.
He turned himself at the Kapolei police station at 9:20 p.m. and was arrested for investigation of negligent homicide and accidental death, a charge similar to failing to render aid.
Police said the victim suffered multiple head and torso injuries and died at the scene. They were investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors in the collision.
