» "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" -- The first three books of Daniel Handler's popular and darkly comic children's novella series get the big screen adaptation. The three young Baudelaire orphans are taken in by a series of odd relatives and others (including narrator Snicket), starting with the cunning and dastardly Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), who hopes to snatch their inheritance from them.

» "Spanglish" -- James L. Brooks ("Terms of Endearment" and "As Good As It Gets") wrote and directed this romantic comedy about a beautiful Mexican emigrant and her 12-year-old daughter who live with the affuent Los Angeles family the single mother works for. Spanish film star Paz Vega makes her English-language debut. The American family includes Adam Sandler as a celebrated restaurant chef and Téa Leoni as his neurotic wife. When sparks fly between the husband and the help, a cataclysmic domestic devolution begins. (PG-13)
