Former UH student
held in murder

WESTFIELD, Mass. » A former University of Hawaii student was charged with fatally shooting a senior at the University of Massachusetts this week.

Bryan Johnston, 23, of Westfield, is accused of murdering David Sullivan earlier this week in Sullivan's off-campus apartment in Amherst.

Police have not offered a motive, but say the two had a fight sometime before the shooting.

Westfield State College Vice President Barry Maloney said Johnston was a senior who made dean's list last semester. He was a criminal justice major at Westfield State College who had one of his guns seized by police last month after showing it off in a bar.

Johnston had transferred to the college from the University of Hawaii, but Maloney said he didn't know when. Johnston and Sullivan reportedly were close friends at Wahconah Regional High School in Dalton.
