VOLCANO, Hawaii » A wildfire in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island was almost entirely contained yesterday, officials said.

The fire, which scorched 656 acres, had not spread since Wednesday and was about 80 percent contained, park Ranger Mardie Lane said.

Forty firefighters from Eldorado National Forest in California and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park worked to put out hot spots.

The fire was mistakenly believed to be a new eruption site on Kilauea Volcano when the blaze was initially reported Sunday night.

Pawnshop owner charged with fencing

The owner of A-1 Pawn Shop at 1157 N. King St. has been charged with allegedly buying stolen items from undercover police officers and not filling out pawn tickets for them.

Police arrested Quang Tanh Pham on Tuesday. He was charged yesterday with three counts of attempted second-degree theft for buying stolen items from undercover officers on Dec. 1, Monday and Tuesday.

Pham is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Pawnshops, by law, must keep track of what they buy by having customers fill out a pawn ticket, which includes the seller's personal information and details about the items sold. The ticket also includes a thumbprint of the person who sold the items.

Detectives said the 43-year-old shop owner was the fence for suspects involved in several burglaries across Oahu.

Tape catches thief's act on video in Kailua

A 16-year-old Kailua boy was arrested for suspicion of first-degree burglary after his neighbor captured his alleged crime on a surveillance video, police said.

The 47-year-old neighbor's Kailua house had been broken into several times in the past months, and he had suspected his neighbor's son, according to police. The victim set up a surveillance camera and left a small coin purse with two $5 bills inside in an open area, police said.

When the man got home yesterday, he saw his neighbor's son nearby and checked the surveillance video and saw the boy searching the house and taking items.

Police said the burglary occurred sometime between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. yesterday.

Police said the boy admitted to entering the house and tried to return the money. The case is pending investigation.
