Head west for Sunset on the Plains events

The West Oahu community will be treated to two days of free films and fun in the sun when Sunset on the Plains returns to Kapolei Regional Park, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.

Highlights include Kapolei's annual Holiday Electric Light Parade of decorated city vehicles, marching units and an appearance by Santa Claus, starting at 6 p.m., and Sunday's fireworks display at dusk.

The parade starts at Kealanani Avenue, ending at Kapolei Regional Park.

Nonstop entertainment on the main stage begins at 12:30 p.m. both days.

An Ohana Village sponsored by Seagull Schools will feature activities for keiki, including bouncers, castles, rides, carnival games, face painting, a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament, cookie decorating, bingo and crafts.

Those who need to get in some holiday shopping can check out the West Oahu Marketplace, offering items from local artisans and businesses.

At 7 p.m. both days, movies will be shown on the city's 30-foot screen. Tomorrow's film is "Shrek 2"; Sunday's is "Spider-Man 2."

As always, plenty of edibles will be sold.

Parking will be available at Kapolei Fairgrounds at Farrington Highway and Fort Barrette Road. Enter from Kealanani Avenue.

A $2 donation is requested, with proceeds going to Project Graduation Programs at Kapolei, Campbell and Waipahu high schools. For information call Maeda Timson at 349-5992 or 523-CITY (2489).

THIS JUST IN
Sofa bed solves puzzle of looks and practicality

By day it's a couch with modern clean lines and sophisticated appeal, sleek enough to hold its own at a holiday soiree without camouflage of throw pillows or sofa covers. By night, party guests who've had one too many can simply sleep on it.

The Puzzle sofa bed has arrived at DeZign Home. "We've only had it in less than a week, and it's a pretty hot seller, slated to be one of our more popular items," store manager Graig Galvin said.

To convert, simply lift the backrest forward to release a ratchet mechanism that allows it to fold flat. At 79 inches wide and 43 inches deep fully reclined (there's also a "lounging" position), it is wider than a twin and a little less than a full-size bed.

Cost: $579 for a stylish piece with dual function. Take a look at the corner of Queen Street and Ward Avenue, or call 791-3330.

Have weeds? They'll travel

In HGTV's "Landscapers' Challenge," three professional landscapers compete to win the vote of a homeowner who needs help with his or her yard. The show is going on the road and looking for front- or backyard projects on Oahu. The chosen homeowner will receive free design services.

Applicants must live in or within 25 miles of Honolulu and have at least a $20,000 budget for landscaping. This estimate is based on soft-scaping (plants) and labor, lighting, irrigation, hard structures and other items. Front yards needing new driveways require at least $30,000; back yards needing built-in barbecue areas, renovated patio or wood decking, at least $35,000; pool renovations, at least $45,000; and new pools, at least $85,000. These budgets are strongly recommended by the show to generate designer interest.

Deadline to apply is Feb. 1. For information visit www.pietown.tv/shows/lcclientreqs.html.
