Fitzgerald, Weinberg earn WAC honors

Lauren Fitzgerald, a senior for the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine, was named the Western Athletic Conference women's tennis player of the month yesterday.

The Santa Maria, Calif., native finished the fall 6-2 in singles. Fitzgerald defeated preseason No. 7 Diane Hollands of Arizona 6-2, 7-6 (7) in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.

Hawaii's Bryon Weinberg, a junior from Ontario, Canada, was named the WAC men's tennis player of the month. He had a 4-3 singles record in November and advanced to the round of 32 in the ITF Waikoloa Futures tournament.

Hawaii swimmer honored: Hawaii's Melanie Schlanger was named athlete of the week in Western Athletic Conference swimming and diving yesterday.

Schlanger, a freshman from Australia, outshined her competition at the University of Texas Invitational over this past weekend, posting her season-best times of 22.95 in the 50 free and 49.35 in the 100 freestyle, which is a Hawaii record. She also holds the team's best time in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.16.

New look for Manoa Maniacs

The Manoa Maniacs, the official UH student spirit group, will have a new look for the men's basketball game against St. Mary's on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Students who purchased season tickets for men's basketball will receive a free polo rugby shirt with the Manoa Maniacs membership. Season-ticket holders can pick up their shirts starting Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center box office.

The shirt has green and white stripes, the Manoa Maniacs' logo embroidered on the left chest and the Sierra Mist logo (presenting sponsor of the group) embroidered on the back.

Students who are not season-ticket holders can purchase the shirt for $39 at the Stan Sheriff Center box office by showing their valid UH identification card.

3 teams capture Ekolu sectional titles

A total of 27 teams from the USTA/Hawaii Pacific Section participated in the Ekolu League Sectional Championships played at the Central Oahu Regional Park Tennis Complex this past weekend.

Emerging victorious from the 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 divisions were Racquet Attack (Hilo), Friends (Honolulu) and 96797 Team 8.0 (Waipahu). More than 1,500 players participated in the Ekolu League, consisting of a three-team (men's, women's and mixed doubles) format.

Tennis tournament to be held Dec. 18-19

The 84th annual Ala Moana Open, a men's and women's singles and doubles tennis tournament, will be held Dec. 18-19 at the Diamond Head Tennis Center, beginning at 8 a.m.

Tournament fees are $3.50 for singles and $5 per doubles team. Entries close Friday, noon. For more information call the Diamond Head Tennis Center at 971-7150.
