"Red Sky at Night,"
by Bill Bigelow
(Author House, $24)
Bigelow, a Navy and public-relations veteran, has constructed a fast-paced military thriller that also reads as a plausible meditation on the scary art of brinksmanship. Also a terrific example of the print-on-demand medium, although authors really need tips on typography.

"The Fish and Their Gifts,"
by Joshua Kaiponohea Stender
(Kamehameha Schools Press, $15.95)
Ten students from one of Kamehameha's charter schools created this charming, thoughtful book, and the illustrations are first-rate. Flip it over and it's all repeated in Hawaiian! Cool.
