Land and power

In a continuing project called "Diamond Head Series," artist Laura Ruby delves into the hot Hawaiian topic of exploitation of the land, its resources and its people.

"Diamond Head has been divided, arbitrarily broken up, and scarred by various controllers and possessors, just as the Hawaiian land itself has been," Ruby says in her artist's statement. "My prints include the recurent theme of mahele, the Hawaiian division of land, or general shattering of space."

The series includes 54 prints, seven drawings and four installations. The body of work has been exhibited in California and Oregon, and locally on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island.

Selected prints from the series are on display at Kuykendall Hall 106 at the University of Hawaii- Manoa through Thursday.

Kuykendall Hall is located at 1733 Donaghho Road on the UH campus. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. weekdays.
