The Bloomberg / Star-Bulletin Index is a price-weighted index designed to measure the performance of Hawaii-based companies. The index was developed with a base value of 100 as of December 31, 1999. A chart of the index which shows the weekly performance of its members is published weekly in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Going nuts

ML Macadamia Orchards LP's stock surged 16.4 percent this week as it continued to benefit from Hershey Foods Corp.'s foray into the state's macadamia nut industry.

The Big Island grower's shares were the second-best performer in the Bloomberg Honolulu Star-Bulletin index as it ended the week at a four-year high of $4.97. Hershey announced plans to buy Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corp. last month.

Penny stock Mera Pharmaceuticals Inc. was the top gainer as it rose 26.7 percent to 1.9 cents.
