kills isle soldier
The 25th Infantry Division suffered its 13th fatality in Afghanistan on Wednesday: Spc. Isaac E. Diaz of Rio Hondo, Texas, was killed when his Humvee rolled over.
The Pentagon reported last night that Diaz, 26, died in Sharona. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, whose nickname is Wolfhounds.
Diaz was the fourth Schofield Barracks soldier to die of noncombat wounds within a week.
On Saturday three members of the 25th Division -- Lt. Col. Michael J. McMahon, 41, of Connecticut; Chief Warrant Officer Travis W. Grogan, 31, of Moore, Okla.; and Spc. Harley D. Miller, 21, of Spokane, Wash. -- were lost in the mountains near Bamiyan when their Spanish-built CASA 212 aircraft crashed.
Diaz became the 48th soldier with Hawaii ties to die in Kuwait, Iraq or Afghanistan since March 2003.
Eighteen soldiers, one sailor, 14 Marines and one civilian with Hawaii ties have been killed in Iraq since the war started in March 19, 2003.
Of the 34 deaths in Iraq, 31 were due to hostile action. One soldier was killed in Kuwait last year.
