Surfing’s film legends
screen on North Shore

The first Surf Drive-In Film Festival will bring 23 films to the North Shore from today through Sunday, at the Waialua Community Association, 66-434 Kamehameha Highway.

Festival films will include some of surfing's greatest past and present surf movies by legends like Bud Browne, Greg Noll, Bruce Brown, George Greenough, Bill Delaney and Greg Macgillivray. There are several world, United States and Hawaii premieres, a Tribute Night to a classic filmmaker, and a surf filmmaker panel discussion. Admission for each film is $8, with a couple of free events noted below.

Today

» 7 p.m.: It's Ladies Night, with four films screening -- "AKA: Girl Surfer," "Surfcheck," "The Obsession Sessions" and "A Girl's Surf Addiction."

» 9 p.m.: "Change the Subject" makes its world premiere, followed by "The Sixth Element," about big-wave surfing. "Change the Subject," shot on 16 mm and digital video, focuses on modern performance surfing, including epic contest clashes between world champions in locations from France, Spain and Tahiti, to Australia, Hawaii and California. The film features Kelly Slater, Andy and Bruce Irons, Mick Fanning, Taj Burrow, the Hobgoods, Dean Morrison, Joel Parkinson, Cory and Shea Lopez, Taylor Knox, Chris Ward and Paul Paterson.

Saturday

» 1 p.m. : Eleven films will be shown, including the U.S. premieres of "Shaping the Future," "Kleeman and Mike" and "Bulbo in Surf and Turf," and the Hawaii premiere of "Paradise Nebraska" followed by "singlefin: yellow."

» 3 p.m.: '70s flashback section begins with the Hawaii premieres of "2 Mo Betah" and "The Far Shore," followed by the surfing classic, "Five Summer Stories."

» 5 p.m.: "Tribute Night" features a free documentary on surf film pioneer Bud Brown.

» 6:30 p.m.: The Family Environment section includes "Kokua" and "Riding Waves."

» 8 p.m.: These films are recommended for mature audiences, ages 15 and over, due to language. This section includes the world premiere of "Freak Show" and Hawaii premieres of "Electric Mayhem" and "Drive-Thru South Central America."

Sunday

» 5 p.m.: Free Bonfire Chat with an international panel of surf filmmakers

» 6:30 p.m.: A classic surf film, to be announced, will be screened along with the Hawaii premiere of "Ocean Tribe" (rated R due to language), about four friends who grow up together along the Northern California coast, and reunite seven years after high school to take a dying friend on a last road trip to Baja, Mexico.

» 8:30 p.m.: Bruce Brown's surf classic, "The Endless Summer."
