Garcia off to fast start in O'Neill World CupInspired by last week's victory at Haleiwa's Vans Hawaiian Pro, 34-year-old Sunny Garcia of Waianae picked up right where he left off in the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing yesterday at Sunset Beach.The World Cup is the second jewel of the Vans Triple Crown, which Garcia has won five times previously. Garcia posted back-to-back scores of 7.17 and 6.5 points (out of a possible 10) to wrap up his third-round heat against Danilo Costa of Brazil, Brian Toth of Puerto Rico and Jarrad Howse of Australia. "I think I got down to 206, 207 (pounds), now I'm back up to 211," said Garcia of his post-Thanksgiving weight. "But in this kind of surf, you don't need to be light." A rising swell oscillated between the North and West peak at Sunset Beach, delivering waves that ranged from punchy eight footers to heaving closeouts across the channel. Marcus Hickman of Hawaii, David Weare of South Africa, Pablo Gutierrez of Spain, Mikael Picon of France, Masatoshi Ohno of Japan and Fabio Gouveia of Brazil also won heats yesterday.
Narkon named third-team All-American
Just a sophomore, Narkon became the first Mustangs player to earn All-American honors after averaging 4.95 kills and 2.85 digs per game in leading the team to a 22-10 record. She was named to the All-PacWest first team after leading the conference in kills.
Hawaii-Hilo's Esene named PacWest's bestHawaii-Hilo senior swingman Skip Esene was named PacWest Player of the Week after averaging 20.8 points per game last week in leading the Vulcans to four straight victories.Esene scored 30 points in a win over Hillside and added 20 against Shippensburg. He also averaged 6.3 rebounds a game and shot 52 percent from the field. He currently ranks third in the conference in scoring, and eighth in both field goal percentage and rebounding.
Professionals own amateurs in Burns tourneyThe top 12 professional and amateur players in the state faced off in the first round of the 32nd annual Governor John A. Burns Challenge Cup yesterday at Mid-Pacific Country Club.The professionals took an 8-4 lead heading into today's final round. The professional teams of Kevin Carll and Kirk Nelson along with Andrew Feldmann and Ron Castillo Jr. each won both rounds played yesterday. The morning round featured four-ball matches while the afternoon round was a foursome match play. Today's final round will be played in a single match format.
Nissan scholarship program in 23rd yearThe Hawaii High School Athletic Association and Nissan North America announced the 23rd annual Nissan Hall of Honor Athletic Scholarship program, which recognizes excellence in athletics by Hawaii's high school seniors.Each year, 12 deserving athletes are chosen for the Hall. Selection is based primarily on athletic achievement with emphasis put on leadership, versatility, sportsmanship, dedication, academics, and behavior on and off the field and is voted on by an independent 16-member selection committee.
