Frank Hewitt was at Jerry Santos' gig Saturday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The crowd got an early Christmas gift when Hewitt performed a couple of hulas. ... Earlier this month, beach volleyball player Karch Kiraly was seen at Hula Grill Waikiki enjoying pupus and cocktails with several friends. Kiraly was in town hosting the inaugural Swatch Hawaiian Classic Beach Volleyball Tournament at Queen's Beach. ...

It's been a while since I've congratulated anyone but that doesn't mean there's a shortage of people doing great things out there. Tomorrow the Girl Scout Council of Hawaii is honoring four women in education at the its fund-raiser dinner. Patricia Hamamoto, superintendent of the Department of Education; Rose Y. Tseng, Chancellor at the UH-Hilo; Sue Wesselkamper, president of Chaminade University; and Nancy White, head of school for La Pietra Hawaii School for Girls, will be given this year's "Women of Distinction" award. The gala will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the Coral Ballroom of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Tickets are $150. Call 595-8400. ... At the Organization of Women Leaders, Toby Bailin and Anna Marie Springer will be honored with the group's leadership award. Bailin works in the Judiciary and Springer for American Savings Bank. ... On Nov. 8, Thomas "Tommy" Hirano was presented with the Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation by Consul General of Japan Masatoshi Muto. Out of the 150 people who have been honored with this award, only 15 have been from Hawaii. Past awardees include former first lady Jean Ariyoshi, musician Jake Shimabukuro and sumo wrestler Yasukochi Konishiki. ... Hawaii Polo Inn president Michael Dailey was inducted as a member of the third class in the Culver Academies Horsemanship Hall of Fame. ...

Kudos also to Roxy and Keep A Breast Foundation for raising $22,000 for the Kapiolani Women's Center Rell Sunn Fund by auctioning 24 plaster casts of professional female surfers and key surf industry representatives. ... And also to Castle High School Thespian troupe #566 for collecting 277 pounds of food for the Hawaii Foodbank as part of the Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat national food collection campaign. More than 206,000 pounds of non-perishable food was collected by more than 250 thespian troupes from 26 states. ...
