Slam poets gather
tonight at the Garage

SLAM POETRY is in the spotlight this week, with three events lined up that you don't want to miss.

I've already told you about Kealoha and his move to the Hawaiian Hut for December's edition of "First Thursdays." Tonight, two other local poets introduce a new monthly that promises to keep the art form entrenched in downtown's entertainment scene.

After hosting similar events at Coffee Talk and Ward's Rafters, Brenda Kwon and Travis Thompson present "re:Verses" tonight at the ARTS at Marks Garage, starting at 8 p.m.

"We want to promote poetical creativity outside of a competitive atmosphere," says Thompson, who sees the new event as a training ground rather than a battlefield for upcoming talent.

Poets Joy Harjo, Juliet Kono, Jesse Lipman, Gary Pak, Kathryn Takara and Richard Hamasaki will perform before an open-mic session gets under way, with DJ Mr. Nick serving up jazz as the evening's soundtrack. Call 753-4661 ...

ALSO IN town this week is Cambodian-American rapper Prach Ly, whose mix of English and Khmer rhymes has garnered him international attention.

Ly will perform at 7 p.m. tonight at UH-Manoa's Architecture Auditorium, followed by a question-and-answer session. He'll also make a guest appearance at "First Thursdays" this week ...

IF YOU'VE never had a reason to check out the Honolulu Academy of Arts before, this week is your chance to visit.

Tomorrow through Monday, the Doris Duke Theatre hosts a special screening of "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster," a documentary that's been called one of the best of 2004.

Showings are scheduled at 1 p.m. tomorrow and Thursday, 7:30 p.m. tomorrow through Saturday and next Monday, and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are just $5 each; call 532-8768 ...

AND AFTER a successful debut last year, Ohana Records has released "Our Ohana's 2nd Christmas," a benefit CD for the Hawaii Foodbank.

According to the food bank's Lori Kaya, more than $3,000 was raised last year from sales of the album. Ten Feet, Weldon Kekauoha, Kimo Villarimo and Na Kama are among the artists who appear on this year's CD, available in stores now ...
