Tripler tree-lightingTripler Army Medical Center will conduct its annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday outside the hospital's oceanside entrance.Gov. Linda Lingle is scheduled to attend the ceremony and visit with wounded and injured soldiers and Marines. The ceremony will include the traditional lighting of the tree and entertainment from the Pacific Fleet Band. In addition, Pamela Divine, deployment specialist with the Pacific Regional Medical Command, and her Halau Hula mai ka Pu'uwai a ka Mana'o will perform. Santa Claus will also make an appearance. Common Book finaleLois-Ann Yamanaka, author of "Wild Meat and the Bully Burgers," will be the main speaker at the Dec. 8 conclusion of the college's Common Book Program.Over the last semester, Windward Community College invited the community to participate in reading and discussing the issues raised in "Fast Food Nation," the New York Times best seller by Eric Schlosser. Discussions have ranged from genetically modified food to nutrition to how to run a good restaurant. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and take place at Paliku Theatre on the WCC campus. Boy choir in concertWhile you're on a holiday spending spree, you'll be happy to hear that some things are still free, such as the Honolulu Boy Choir's annual Christmas Concert. It's being held at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 12 at Central Union Church.This year's program, "Christmas Is," will feature the choir, led by returning director Ka'imi Pelekai, and the Boy Choir hula halau under the direction of Kumu Kaleo Trinidad. Special guests include "American Idol" finalist Jordan Segundo, Tani Lynn, FortŽ's Marlene Baldueza and the Iwalani Dance Halau. The concert, which has become a popular annual Christmas tradition, is free and open to everyone. Tax-deductible donations will be accepted at the door to support the choir. Central Union Church is at 1660 S. Beretania St., with free on-site parking. Call 596-7464.
