Olympian Clay to hold clinic next monthOlympic decathlon silver medalist Bryan Clay will join six other world-class athletes in conducting a free track and field clinic from 9 to 11 a.m. on Dec. 11 at Kaiser High School as part of Honolulu Marathon week.Clay, a Castle graduate who ended his prep sports career at Kaiser's track in a state championship meet in which he set four event records that still stand, is the first Hawaii athlete to win an Olympic medal in track and field. Clay will demonstrate javelin throwing. Olympic shot put silver medalist Adam Nelson and U.S. champion high-jumper Jamie Nieto will also perform. They will be joined by U.S. 100-meter hurdler Danielle Carruthers and three Irish national track and field record holders. For information, go to www.honolulumarathon.org/media.html.
Junior Tennis Championships set for Dec. 4-5The 2004 Aloha Airlines Junior Tennis Championships, Hawaii's invitational tournament for the state's top players ages 10-18, is set for Dec. 4-5 on the Big Island at several resorts on the Kona side.Nearly 200 boys and girls in novice, intermediate and grand-prix divisions are expected for the 17th edition of the tournament.
Registration opens for Honolulu TriathlonThe JAL Honolulu Triathlon has opened up registrations at www.honolulutriathlon.com and costs $75 for individuals and $100 for teams until Feb. 28.The triathlon drew 1,000 competitors last year and expects to exceed that number for its April 17 event. The ITU JAL Honolulu World Cup will be run the day before.
