Tolentino’s
gym workouts
helped with his
‘King & I’ role

JUST IN TIME for Thanksgiving: John Tolentino, who portrays the Kralahome in Army Community Theatre's production of "The King & I," admits that long hours in the gym helped him get ready for the chest-baring costumes he wears in the show. Another way he keeps excess weight off: "I don't eat rice" ... Kutmaster Spaz is also skipping carbs these days. Spaz went straight for the chicken and steak at Toa's CD release party on Monday and even passed on the local-kine stew to avoid the carbs in it ...

A LUCKY BREAK: Lou and Beth Michener saw Andy Bumatai at the Monarch Room while honeymooning 22 years ago. Back at the Royal last week with sons Sean and Scott, they asked concierge Wendy Nagaishi if Bumatai would be performing in Waikiki during their stay and were in the audience for the shooting of his DVD in the Palace Showroom last Saturday ...

CONGRATULATIONS: To Missing Dave. The group will be celebrating its 5th anniversary tomorrow at Bedroq Bar & Grill. Here's hoping they play all their originals and cut back on the cover band stuff ... Congratulations also to Jack Law and Eaton "Bob" Magoon, who celebrate the Wave Waikiki's 24th anniversary on Saturday. Can anyone name a nightclub in Hawaii that has been open at the same location under the same name and with the same owners longer than the Wave? If you know of one, let me know. Doors open at 10 p.m. ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: To Bret Bollinger, whose big day is Sunday ... also to Katherine Mills, who will hit "the Big One-Eight" on Monday and thereby assume all the legal liabilities of adulthood without being able to legally enjoy all the privileges ...

GREAT MEMORIES: Bravo to "Uncle Tom" Moffatt who replaced the usual limited "Oldies 107.9" playlist last Saturday with a countdown of the top 75 songs in the KPOI "Marathon of Hits" from 1963 that included a few that never made the national charts. It was interesting to note the odd "whitebread" preferences of the Honolulu pop radio audience back in 1963 -- nothing by Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Jackie Wilson or James Brown made the top 75! Moffatt breaks format again this Saturday with the top 50 songs from the 1973 "Marathon of Hits." The countdown starts at 8 a.m. ...
