Wahiawa water pump due to be fixed todayHonolulu Board of Water Supply officials expected a broken water pump that supplies Wahiawa and Whitmore Village to be fixed by this morning.The pump, one of two that fed the area, broke Saturday night and is several hundred feet underground. The Board of Water Supply has told residents that water pressure might be low without conservation.
Grant supports study of land use in SE AsiaA senior fellow at the East-West Center has been awarded a $550,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.Jefferson Fox will use the grant to study the impact of changes in land use in Southeast Asia, the center said. A 42-month project will explore the effect of new roads and markets on traditional land-use practices and livelihoods in mountainous regions. "The project will enhance the knowledge of the scientific community regarding the dynamics and agents of land use in a region undergoing a dynamic transformation socially, economically, politically and environmentally," Fox said. "The project will also trace the impact of these changes on people's daily lives and their environment," he said. A multidisciplinary team -- including economists, geographers and sociologists -- will collect data that explain how land-use practices are affected by such events as changes in national taxation policies. The funds will be used for strategic planning to strengthen its programs to end domestic violence in Hawaii. » Finance Factors has raised $6,301 through its 2004 Benefit Breakfast for the Hawaii Meals on Wheels program, which feeds frail elderly and homebound people with disabilities. » PATCH has received a $ 5,000 grant from Friends of Hawaii Charities Inc. to implement an Ohana Advocate program, which develops a parent education and support system and establishes a rapport with Hawaiian families involved in the Keiki Steps child care project. PATCH has also received $27,277 from the Robert E. Black Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation to support the design and implementation of its continuing-education unit. » About 130 golfers raised more than $40,000 for the YWCA of Oahu to benefit the women's and girls' programs at the first YWCA Golf Classic at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club.

By Star-Bulletin staff HONOLULUEx-boyfriend allegedly uses auto as weaponPolice arrested a 52-year-old Waipahu man on suspicion of attempted murder Sunday after he allegedly rammed his vehicle into his former girlfriend's car while she and her current boyfriend were inside in Kalihi.Police said the woman, 41, and her 28-year-old boyfriend, both of Kalihi, were riding in her vehicle about 1 p.m. yesterday when the suspect's vehicle collided with it. Police said the suspect followed the couple to a nearby parking lot where he tried to use his vehicle to hit the man as he stepped out of the car. Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder and two counts of reckless endangering.
Suspect is wanted for attempted murderPolice were looking for a 33-year-old man who allegedly sideswiped a van twice with two people inside who had told him he was trespassing at an apartment building last week.Police said the occupants of the van, a 54-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman, are resident managers at the building at North King Street and Robello Lane in Kalihi. The couple blocked the driveway exit with their van, police said. The suspect became agitated and tried to escape by crashing through a metal gate, and hit the victims' van twice, police said. When the suspect tried to maneuver his vehicle between the van and the apartment building, the vehicle got stuck on a large concrete block, police said. The suspect squeezed through a front passenger window and escaped. The suspect was identified in a photographic lineup. He faces arrest on attempted murder, two counts of criminal property damage and auto theft.
WINDWARD OAHUPickup truck collides with bus in KahanaA male was critically injured Sunday night when a pickup truck he was driving collided head-on with a city bus on Kamehameha Highway in Kahana.Police said the gray 2003 Nissan pickup truck was overtaking vehicles in the Kaneohe-bound lanes when it crossed a double solid yellow line on a bend before colliding with the bus. The collision occurred about 10 p.m. on Kamehameha Highway, half a mile east of Trout Farm Road. A male passenger in the truck was in serious condition, while a female passenger suffered minor injuries, police said. Both men were flown to the Queen's Medical Center. The 61-year-old male bus driver was not injured.
