Smith successfully defends title

Brigham Young-Hawaii junior Chelsea Smith captured her second NCAA II women's cross country championship yesterday, blowing past the competition in Evansville, Ind. She was also named the NCAA II National Women's Cross Country Runner of the Year.

Smith was chased by Clayton State's Allison Kreutzer, who closed to finish just 3 seconds behind Smith after trailing by 19 seconds at the 2-mile mark of the 6-kilometer race.

Smith finished the race in a time of 21:33.0. She finishes her collegiate career going undefeated since her junior year, and her back-to-back national titles make her just the fifth woman in NCAA II history to win two cross country individual titles.

Warriors finally fall to Tigers

The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team fell short of claiming its fourth straight win over Pacific in as many days, losing to the Tigers in a sweep, 31-29, 32-30, 30-22 at Kauai High School gym last night.

Without opposite Matt Bender, out for the second straight match with the flu, the Warriors were led by sophomore Lauri Hakala, who slammed down 12 kills.

Rainbows sign 13 recruits for 2006

The University of Hawaii baseball team inked 13 recruits for the 2006 season, head coach Mike Trapasso announced yesterday.

The group has already been tabbed as one of the top 25 recruiting classes in the country by Student Sports Baseball.

Hawaii seniors to sign with the 'Bows include pitcher Jayson Kramer of Mid Pacific and catcher Kevin Fujii of Roosevelt.

Other signees are Cody Allen, RHP/OF; Daniel Caldwell, RHP; Matthew Daly, RHP; Tyler Davis, RHP; Jorge Franco, IF; Justin Frash, IF; Ian Harrington, LHP; Landon Hernandez, C; Mau Roquemore, OF; Ryan Seldan, IF and Jeff Soskin, LHP.

The 2005 season starts Feb. 10, when Hawaii takes on Alabama at Les Murakami Stadium.

Odesnik, Evans head to Futures final

Wayne Odesnik of the United States held on to defeat countryman Alex Kuznetsov 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in a semifinal match of the Honolulu Futures Tournament yesterday at Diamond Head Courts.

The win vaulted Odesnik into today's final against Bredan Evans of the United States. Evans defeated Fritz Wolmarans of South Africa 6-2, 6-2. The match starts at 10 a.m.

Seasiders finish fifth at Western Championships

The 14th-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's water polo team squeaked by 17th-ranked Whittier 11-9 yesterday.

The win secured a fifth place finish for the Seasiders at the Western Water Polo Association Championships.

BYUH's Vanja Kalabic was named to the WWPA's first team after the match and Jordan Brink earned honorable mention.

Wallace to speak at Quarterback Club

University of Hawaii basketball coach Riley Wallace headlines the group of speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.

Warrior football coaches Wes Suan and Mike Cavanaugh are also scheduled to speak.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. in the Pagoda Ballroom.
