Sea Warriors out of regional

Barbara Martin had 25 kills but couldn't stop No. 1 seed UC San Diego from rallying to beat her Sea Warriors in the second round of the NCAA division II volleyball tournament 19-30, 30-26, 23-30, 30-28, 15-11 last night in La Jolla, Calif.

HPU, the fifth seed, led the Tritons 8-0 in the fourth game but allowed UC San Diego back in the game.

Chaminade falls: Brianna Harris had 23 kills and Cathleen Price added 22 to help the Coyotes to a 24-30, 30-27, 30-25, 30-23 win over the Silverswords in the other semifinal.

Seasiders win 2 in the pool

The BYU-Hawaii men's water polo team won both of its games at yesterday's Western Water Polo Association Playoffs in Davis, Calif.

The Seasiders (15-4) beat Pomona-Pitzer 11-4 and Air Force 11-9 in consolation bracket action.

UH softball signs 6 recruits

Six high school seniors submitted their National Letters of Intent to the University of Hawaii softball team.

Hawaii inked pitchers Justine Smethurst of Australia and Courtney Baughman of Valencia, Calif. Also joining the 'Bows in 2006 are Audrey Andrade, a right fielder and first baseman from Glendale, Calf. and Julie Franklin, a shorstop from Temple City, Calif. Gail Matsushima (Punahou) and Tanisha Milca (Kailua) were the only local players to sign.

State Open tied up going into final round

Norman-Ganin Asao, Joe Phengsavath and Chad Saladin share the lead after the first round of the Hawaii State Open at Hawaii Prince Golf Club.

All three are tied at 4-under-par 68. The tournament ends tomorrow.

Top seeds fall at Futures

Alex Kuznetsov of the United States upset top-seeded Vladimir Pavicevic of Serbia-Montenegro 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the Honolulu Futures at Diamond Head Courts yesterday.

Second-seed Zack Fleishman was also upset by Brendan Evans 6-4, 6-2.

Kuznetsov and Horia Tecau were declared doubles winners after their semifinal win.

Hawaii swimmers sink Tigers

The University of Hawaii men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept the University of Pacific last night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

The Rainbow Warriors (7-0) defeated the Tigers 197-89, while the Rainbow Wahine (8-1) won 175-118.

Akebono to fight Gracie in Japan

Akebono, or Hawaii's Chad Rowan, announced that he will fight Royce Gracie in a mixed martial arts event in Japan on New Year's Eve.

Akebono is in town to manage his fight stable in tonight's "Rumble on the Rock" at the Blaisdell Arena. He plans to fight Gracie, who is in tonight's main event against Hilo's B.J. Penn, in the Osaka Dome on a promotion called "Dynamite."

BYUH improves to 2-0 in basketball

The Brigham Young-Hawaii basketball team geared up for its Saturday clash with No. 14 Louisville by beating Northwood 104-63 at Laie last night.

HPU loses: David Zellman scored 23 points and Jon Urbach added 22 as Winona State defeated Hawaii Pacific 98-67 at the BYU-Hawaii Tournament last night.
