Saint Louis wins directory
recycling contest

Saint Louis School, which recycled 77,460 pounds of old telephone books, won the $2,000 first prize in the Verizon Oahu Telephone Book Recycling Contest, officials announced yesterday.

Altogether, 52 schools took part, bringing in nearly 500,000 pounds of books. Any school that recycled more than 2,500 pounds of books received $100, and larger cash prizes were awarded to the eight schools that recycled the most.

"The participating schools have done a fantastic job," said Paul Oshiro, Verizon director of government affairs. "It is heartwarming to know that our students are not only learning about protecting the environment and actively participating in that protection, but are also earning rewards for their schools."

Other winners are:

» Second place, $1,000, Lanikai Elementary, 70,199 pounds of books.

» Third place, $500, Holomua Elementary, 35,720 pounds.
» Fourth place, $500, Star of the Sea School, 25,840 pounds.
» Fifth place, $250, Radford High School, 23,858 pounds.
» Sixth place, $250, Kalakaua Middle School, 21,040 pounds.
» Seventh place, $250, Likelike Elementary, 16,840 pounds.
» Eighth place, $250, St. Anthony Parish School, 15,080 pounds.

Any extra telephone books may be brought to the city's community recycling bins through the end of the year.
