Workshop focuses on Buddhist cooking

A free workshop on Buddhist vegetarian cooking will be offered next Saturday at Wahiawa Hongwanji Mission, 1067 California Ave.

The 2 p.m. Shojin Ryori class will be taught by the Rev. Earl Ikeda, minister at Puna Hongwanji on the Big Island. Ikeda worked as an apprentice in a Kyoto, Japan, restaurant while studying Shin Buddhism there.

For information, call the mission, 622-4320, between 8 and 11 a.m. on weekdays.

Unity Church to hold anniversary reunion

The Unity Church of Hawaii congregation will host a reunion of former members tomorrow at its 40th-anniversary celebration.

The 11 a.m. service will be followed by a reception at 12:30 p.m. The Rev. Earl Andersen, who was appointed pastor in May, will speak.

The anniversary marks the opening of the current chapel at 3608 Diamond Head Road in 1964. Unity Church was first organized in Hawaii in 1937, a branch of the Unity movement of practical Christianity that was begun in 1880. Its focus is on healing through prayer and positive thinking.

Handel's 'Messiah' starts celebration

Central Union Church will launch its celebration of Christmas next weekend by continuing a 57-year tradition.

The church's annual presentation of George Frederick Handel's "Messiah" will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 28 in the sanctuary at 1660 S. Beretania St.

Noel Lovelace will conduct the 100-voice Oratorio Choir and Handel Festival Chamber Orchestra in the Christmas portion of the oratorio, written in 1742. The soloists are soprano Catherine Goto, alto Leigh Ann Braley, tenor Kalani Brady and bass Christopher Kelsey.

A free-will offering will be accepted to cover costs.
