Studio 1 shuts down
tomorrow

A LITTLE more than two years after first opening its doors, downtown art gallery/performance space Studio 1 will close for good tomorrow night.

It seems fitting that the final promoter to throw a party there is Kavet the Catalyst, whose monthly "Trip the Lights" would draw a steady stream of underground hip-hop fans to the area.

Tomorrow night, members of Los Angeles group The Visionaries will be on hand to send Studio 1 out in style.

Key Kool, LMNO and Writers Block will be joined by DJ Westafa and local acts Nomasterbacks, Emirc, Creed, and the Audible Lab Rats. DJs Skids and Oliver Twist will represent on the decks alongside Kavet as well. Tickets are $15 at the door for those 18-and-over.

Wondering what's going to happen to another popular event that called Studio 1 home?

Spoken word poet Kealoha announced that the "First Thursdays" monthly will move to the Hawaiian Hut next month, with Makana as a special guest ...

ANOTHER BAND competition makes its debut tonight at the Wave Waikiki.

The "Surfest Battle of the Bands" gets started around 10 p.m. with Black Square, Daegra, Pacifica, White Lines and Zen Outlaw facing off for a chance to play in the finals on Dec. 16. The winning band will get to open at "Surfest," play again that night at the Wave's official afterparty, meet with the manager of blink-182 and New Found Glory and score $1,000 cash.

Following a break next week for Thanksgiving, the competition continues the first two Thursdays of December. Call 941-0424, Ext. 12 for more info ...

HAVE YOU seen what's happened to the spot that used to be Denny's at the Diamond Head end of Kalakaua Avenue? It's now called Lulu's Waikiki Surf Club, and continues to get more popular every day after first opening two weeks ago. Open around the clock, cocktails available until 4 a.m. and a sportsbar vibe overlooking the beach -- it's definitely worth a visit ...

AND IF you can make it out to the North Shore, check out the fund-raiser for former Kahuku High football standout Daniel Mapu on Saturday.

Cecilio and Kapono, Ho'onu'a, Three Plus, Vaihi, TOA, and Roots Rockaz will perform at Turtle Bay Resort starting from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $25 each, with the money helping to pay Mapu's medical bills ...
