While waiting to participate in the Shichi Go San event Sunday at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, Kaili Delos Santos expended some energy by running and jumping around. The annual event commemorates a Japanese tradition in which children dress in their best kimonos and pray in Shinto shrines for long and prosperous lives.

Wendi Kadow, a visitor from Vancouver, Wash., got a windy reception yesterday when she visited the Pali Lookout. Wind with sustained gusts between 30 and 39 miles per hour swept through Oahu Sunday and yesterday, causing power failures in Kaimuki, Makiki, Nuuanu, Halawa, Kalihi Valley, Manoa and Sand Island. The National Weather Service said winds are expected to continue decreasing today to 15 to 20 miles per hour. Rains, however, are expected to increase tonight and continue until tomorrow morning before tapering off.
