LEEWARD OAHU
Diving fatality identified as Coast Guard crewman

The 34-year-old Coast Guard member who died Saturday in a recreational diving accident has been identified as Petty Officer 1st Class Mark Mueller.

Mueller was stationed aboard the Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star, based in Seattle.

According to the Coast Guard, Mueller was diving with friends at a Navy ship wreckage off Maili Point on the Waianae Coast.

Witnesses told the Coast Guard that Mueller became unconscious while he was below the surface. At about 6:20 p.m. the master of the diving boat, the Beach, called the Coast Guard to report a diver in distress about 1 1/2 miles from the Waianae Boat Harbor.

Mueller was transported to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Mueller, who joined the Coast Guard in 1995, served as an informational technology specialist and as the Polar Star's information manager.

The Polar Star left Seattle for Antarctica during the first week of the month. The ship arrived in Honolulu on Thursday for a brief stop to make minor repairs and for crew members to rest before they continued on their journey.

Mueller is survived by his wife and stepson. Arrangements for his funeral, to be held in his hometown of Chicago, are pending.
