Free Aston concert
offers leading acts

GET YOUR weekend started with some free entertainment, as the "Aston Moonlight Concert" makes its return to the Kapiolani Park Bandstand.

Running from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. tomorrow, the free event is perfect for those who want to picnic under the stars before heading out to enjoy the rest of their Friday. This year's performance features the Makaha Sons, Kapena and Raiatea Helm. Call 931-1330 ...

ONE PLACE worth checking out afterward is the Hard Rock Cafe, where the Stone Groove Family, Vertical Junkies and Soljah are hosting a special fund-raiser.

Doors open at 9 p.m. tomorrow for those 18-and-over, and there will be a raffle to benefit the family of Jason Bogle, a local pro surfer who died Sept. 29 from bone cancer. A number of Bogle's friends in the surfing community, including Jun Jo, Shane Dorian, Ross Williams, Kalani Robb, Jason Shibata, Mikala Jones and Mike Dodd, have donated boards.

A memorial service has also been planned for 3 p.m. Saturday on the North Shore. Call 236-1449 ...

THIS WEEKEND'S biggest party has to be "Roots Fest" at both Kapono's and Don Ho's Island Grill in Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Doors open at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the venues, and Kapono's will also host a CD release party in honor of O-Shen's new album, "Rising Sun."

Among the bands playing at Kapono's: Mikey Dread, T.H.C., Red Degree, Bamboo, Whitelines, Levi Mayers, Isa Ako and Kawao. The Empire Sound Crew will also be on hand. Over at Don Ho's, the lineup includes Ooklah the Moc, Mama T, Isouljahs, The Ionz, Melodious Solutions and Irie Souls.

Tickets are just $10 for this 21-and-over party; call 536-2100 ...

OTHER PICKS for the weekend: Punk rockers True Sounds of Liberty return to Pipeline on Saturday for a DVD release party, joined by the Enhancements, the Hell Caminos and the Grave Robbers. Tickets are $15 at the door; call 589-1999 ... Local filmmaker Robert Pennybacker and cinematographer Ken Libby host another free screening of "2," starring Donalyn Delacruz and Lopaka Kapanui at 7 p.m. Saturday at the UH-Manoa Art Auditorium ... After a couple of weeks at the Buddha Bar, DFX Entertainment moves the "Good Times Campaign" to the O Lounge on Saturday ...
