Multitalented iNTREPiD
returns for hip-hop show

THE RETURN OF iNTREPiD: Actor/rapper/dancer/performance poet Jonathan Sypert (a k a iNTREPiD) is preparing to return to the University of Hawaii at Manoa for the five-show run of "Jaguar Priests: Our Culture Is Myth" in December. The show, described as "a hip-hop theater myth," opens in the Ernst Lab Theatre on Dec. 1. ...

INTERESTING PEOPLE: Paula Noakes, a big fan of modern Indian music, was chagrined to find she didn't have the cash on hand to buy a copy of Debashish Bhattacharya's current CD, "Reflection of Love," when they went on sale at intermission during his concert at the Honolulu Academy of Arts on Sunday. Desperate for a copy -- Bhattacharya's albums are not available in American record stores -- Noakes dashed several blocks to the nearest ATM and got back just in time to buy the last copy. ... Central Pacific Bank executive Blenn Fujimoto credits his parents with coining his unusual name but says it wasn't created by combining their names or the names of any people he knows. ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: To Brother Noland Conjugacion, who is celebrating today ... also to David Kamakahi (tomorrow), Irving P.K. Santos (Saturday), Tony "TC" Conjugacion (Sunday) and Jack de Mello (Monday) ...

CONGRATULATIONS: To the Aloha Tower Marketplace, which celebrates its 10th anniversary on Saturday. I admit to having had doubts about the destruction of the old terminal area because it had been a satisfactory venue for concerts by Social Distortion, MC Ren, Kid Frost and Arrested Development, but the new facility has become downtown Honolulu's prime entertainment center. Hawaii residents can have difficulty finding parking on the weekends when one of those giant cruise ships is here -- the original developers should have been required to provide adequate parking in 1994, and not by destroying Irwin Park -- but other than that, the tower is an asset to Honolulu and a great place for live local music. Don Ho's is a late-evening music showcase, Chai's presents top Hawaiian acts along with its outstanding menu and superb service, Gordon Biersch is Honolulu's favorite spot for CD release parties, and Kapono's has re-established the old-time concert tradition with shows by artists including Lucky Dube, Jerome Grey, Los Tigres del Norte and Cecilio & Kapono. ...
