Mai Tai gives break
to young musicians
OAHU'S BUDDING musicians have a chance to get heard on Monday and Tuesday nights, thanks to the return of the "Mai Tai Rumble" at Ala Moana Center.
As the name implies, all the action takes place at the Mai Tai Bar, where Island 98.5's Tati hosts the first-round semifinals tonight at 9 p.m.
Kapulu, Dagra, Hot Rain and Bad Mood will be joined by last night's qualifiers, with two openings available in the finals on Nov. 30. And following each night's competition is the "Rumble Aftershock" concert, which features Malie this week.
Applications are still being accepted for the second round in both the island contemporary and open mic categories; stop by the Mai Tai Bar for an application, or visit www.maitairumble.com ...

That's why it's no surprise that his "Mix at Six Vol. 1" did so well in local record stores, with loyal listeners bombarding the station with requests for another mixed CD.
This week, their wishes come true as Vol. 2 hits store shelves with a double album of house featuring acts like Armand Van Helden, Paul Van Dyk, the Warp Brothers and Nick Skitz. Brandon celebrated the new CD with a release party at the Ocean Club last Wednesday night. Keep in mind, however, that only 2,000 copies of the "Mix at Six Vol. 2" have been pressed, and once they're gone, they're gone for good ...
CONGRATS ALSO to local radio jock Fil Slash, who celebrated 11 years on the air last week. He spent the first decade on one frequency (97.5 FM) before following the KPOI call letters to 105.9 The Big Kahuna a couple of months back.
Help the "Ayatollah of Rock-and-Rolla" celebrate by heading down to Kapono's on Wednesday nights this month, where Slash hosts a live broadcast from 6 to 10 p.m. Henry Kapono himself will be playing live ...
SPEAKING OF Kapono's, the restaurant will also host a CD release party for Koa'uka following the live broadcast tomorrow night.
Five years after making their debut with "Tailgate Party," the guys are back at it again with "Just Doing Our Thing," a collection of nine original songs.
Joining the band at this 21-and-over party are Ho'onu'a, Inoa'ole and One12. Cover is $10; call 678-3010 ...
