Kahuku holds on
to No. 1 ranking
Leilehua and Castle almost pulled out upsets over the weekend in prep football. Instead, they fell to the top two teams amid monsoon-like conditions.
Kahuku fought off the stubborn Mules, and Mililani rallied with 21 unanswered points to outlast the Knights.
Kahuku's 12-6 win didn't instill confidence from the Star-Bulletin football top 10 panel. In fact, one voter defected and picked Kamehameha as his new No. 1 squad. Still, the Red Raiders (9-1) collected five of the seven first-place votes and remained atop the rankings released today.
Mililani, which collected a first-place vote, remained locked at No. 2. The Trojans, 10-0, face Kahuku for the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship Friday at Aloha Stadium.
Kamehameha, which won its first Interscholastic League of Honolulu crown in 25 seasons, remained No. 3. The Warriors (8-2-1, 6-1) have a bye until the second round of the states. That means two weeks without a game.
Saint Louis, with its string of 18 consecutive ILH titles cut, finished the season with a win over Damien. The Crusaders improved to No. 4 in the poll.
Lahainaluna, which suffered a 27-7 loss at King Kekaulike on Saturday, dropped a spot to No. 5. The Lunas officially are Maui Interscholastic League champions, though Baldwin is expected to lobby the league for a reinterpretation of tiebreaker rules.
Lahainaluna and Baldwin shared the first-round title, and they also share the same record along with King Kekaulike in the second round. Lahainaluna, however, won the head-to-head matchup against Baldwin in round two after tying the Bears in the first round.
