Diabetes group plans
races, workshops

The American Diabetes Association of Hawaii is holding three events to promote a healthy diet and fun exercise to live with or prevent diabetes, as part of National Diabetes Awareness Month.

Star Markets is sponsoring a patient workshop on Nov. 13 at Mililani High School. Physicians, certified diabetes educators and comedian Bo Irvine will highlight the workshop from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

A "Walk the Aisles" session from noon to 2 p.m. will follow the workshop at the nearby Star Market so patients may apply the lessons they've learned on a healthy diet.

The fourth annual "Tour de Cure" race for bike riders of all ages and skill levels will be held Nov. 14 to raise money for diabetes education and care programs. Registration is $45 and may be made via the Web at www.diabetes.org/tour, or by calling the association at 947-5979.

The race will start and end at Kapiolani Park. Riders can choose from three routes: the 25K (15.5-miles) course goes to Hawaii Kai and back; the 50K (31 miles) route travels to Waimanalo and back; and the 75K (47 miles) course is a loop of the 50K and 25K rides.

Snacks and sport drinks will be available at rest stops, and after the ride, entertainment, food and prizes will be provided at the park. Cyclists who raise at least $500 will qualify for a chance to win the grand prize -- a trip to Napa Valley to ride in the Napa Tour de Cure next spring.
