Tree giveaway
raises awareness

HECO's 11th annual distribution
will take place at five sites

Hawaiian Electric Co. and its Arbor Day partners will give away more than 2,000 potted trees and shrubs on Oahu on Saturday.

The distribution starts at 9 a.m. at the Waimea Valley Audubon Center (the former Waimea Falls Park) on the North Shore, and 7 a.m. at these four sites:

» Waianae: HECO's Kahe power plant.
» Pearl City: Urban Garden Center.
» Honolulu: HECO's Ward Avenue facility across from the Neal Blaisdell Center.
» Kailua: HECO's Koolau Baseyard, across from Maunawili Elementary School.

The annual giveaway began 11 years ago as a way to educate the public about the role of trees in the environment.

Shade provided by the right tree in the right place can lead to significant savings on air conditioning bills. Choosing the right tree can also avoid future entanglement with overhead lines, according to HECO.

Experts in selecting, planting and maintaining the trees will be at each site to offer advice.

Each person who picks up a tree will receive a free brochure with tips on planting and maintenance, and information about each of the species being distributed this year.

Co-sponsors of the HECO program are the Kaulunani Urban Forestry Program of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, the Urban Garden Center and the Waimea Valley Audubon Center.
