Vivas into AVCA Hall of Fame

Punahou graduate Sandy Vivas, the former executive director for the American Volleyball Coaches Association, was named yesterday to the AVCA Hall of Fame Class of 2004.

Vivas joins UCLA men's coach Al Scates, former Long Beach State All-American Debbie Green and former Washington University coach Teri Clemens in the association's second class. The induction will take place Dec. 16 in conjunction with the AVCA's annual meeting and NCAA championship in Long Beach, Calif.

Vivas was the first full-time executive director for AVCA, serving from 1983-2000. During her 17 years, she helped get the organization off the ground and increased membership from 200 to 3,200.

She is the founder, chief executive officer and president of AthleticLink.com, the on-line career resources center for volleyball. Vivas' sister Lindy is the head volleyball coach at Fresno State, which plays at No. 2 Hawaii on Friday.

Warriors move into second

Cody Wolfenberger took the individual lead with a 6-under 66 to lead the Hawaii men's golf team into second place after day two of the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate yesterday at Turtle Bay Resort.

Jarett Hamamoto added a 3-under 69 as the Warriors shot the lowest round of the day as a team, finishing with a 12-under 276, moving them to within three shots of tournament leader UNLV.

Ben Douglas added a 69 for the Warriors while Pierre-Henri Soero shot 72 and Kellen-Floyd Asao 75. The Hawaii 'B' team shot 296 and is tied for 17th.

Ito finishes second: Nebraska senior Merynn Ito (Aiea) shot a career-low 68 to finish second in the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate yesterday in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Ito's 68 was the lowest individual round of the tournament and tied the school record set in 1998 and 2000. Her three-round total of 215 was eight shots better than her previous best performance, which came at last year's Chip-N-Club Invitational.

As a team, the Huskers finished in fourth place, seven strokes in back of tournament champion Campbell University.

Ferry and Edwards win title: Jeff Ferry and Bryan Edwards held off Shane Hoshino and Matt Kodama to win the 2004 Bridgestone Sports Pro-Scratch Championship yesterday at Pearl Country Club.

Kevin Hayashi and Elton Tanaka, who began the second day in a tie with Ferry and Edwards for the lead, shot a 67 and finished in a tie for third place.

HPU remains 14th, Chaminade 25th

Chaminade (15-5), which broke into the rankings two weeks ago, fell four spots to No. 25. Nebraska-Kearney remained the top-ranked team in the country, securing 33 of 35 first-place votes.

Hilo falls in four: The Hawaii-Hilo women's volleyball team suffered its 17th loss of the season, a 30-25, 26-30, 30-20, 30-17 loss to Montana State-Billings last night at Alterowitz Gym.
