Audience sings and dances
at outstanding pops concert
The Symphony Pops put on an outstanding, fun-filled Spooktacular concert of 1970s music that was capped by the
Captain & Tennille and had the audience singing and dancing in the aisles last weekend at the Concert Hall. Before C&T took the stage for the finale and Tennille sang their hits, the show was heavy on male vocalists, with Conductor
Matt Catingub and
Zanuck Lindsey taking several solos. Zanuck also got in hot licks on the guitar, as did Symphony operations chief
Jim Mancuso, who Tennille pointed out was their road manager and sometimes musician in earlier years. Other singers included
Anita Hall, Kale Chang and
Sunway. The orchestra was hot. It was augmented by bassist
Steve Jones and drummer
Sonny Froman. Timpani player and occasional conductor
Stuart Chafetz was a riot in his Spider-Man costume. He dropped from the ceiling in a harness. He said the harness hurt his vital parts. But that didn't keep him from prancing on the stage before conducting. The crowd gave the concert a well deserved standing ovation. Symphony board chair

Roosevelt '49ers donate to new film program
The Roosevelt High Class of '49, my class, will donate about $2,000 to the school's new cinematography department. The class held its 55th reunion Oct. 20-24.

Orby Groves carry the ball and do much of the work for our reunions. Their daughters,
Cindy Farias, Kathy Sekiya and
Jolyn Tenn and granddaughter
Aulani Farias, pitch in and entertain as well, singing and doing hula. The reunion committee of
Irwin "Yoka" Cockett, Bryson Jhung, Lenley Hawksworth, Joan and
Dick Rodby, LaVerne Nimsger, Frank "Steiny" Steinmiller, Mary Sukita, Evie Lee, and
Maile Chang and the Groves arranged the activities, including: A golf tourney at Leilehua, tours of the Missouri and Bowfin, a picnic at Ford Island, the Perry and Price show and a banquet at the Hale Koa. Retired military officers Yoka and Bryson, along with the Groves, were committee heavyweights. The

Kaliko Kalama, Zack Castro and Manny Lopez - entertained at the banquet.
Estrella Luna Larioza played piano.
