Culinary adventureIf you're in the mood for some deluxe cooking education, Waianuhea, a new inn on the Big Island's Hamakua Coast, is hosting a food-and-wine weekend Nov. 12 to 14.The getaway will feature tours of nearby farms, tastings and a cooking class with George Mavrothalassitis of Chef Mavro in Honolulu. Tours include Hawaii Island Goat Dairy, Volcano Isle Honey and Hirabara Farm. Mavrothalassitis' class will include hands-on participation for those who want to join in, followed by a three-course lunch. Rates range from $1,650 to 1,950 for two, including accommodations, breakfasts and afternoon wine hours. Reservations are limited to 12. Call toll-free, 888-775-2577.
Wine benefitSam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch & Crab hosts the annual wine-tasting benefit for Hospice Hawaii from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 13.Selections from the restaurant menu will be served alongside wines paired by Fujioka's Wine Merchants. A silent auction will offer gift certificates, wine and gift baskets. Cost is $50. Call 924-9255.
Special eventsOutback Steakhouse: A new Kapolei location opens tomorrow with a fund-raising night for AYSO soccer. Doors open at 5 p.m. A portion of the first night's sales will be donated to AYSO-Leeward Region 269. Call 674-1300.Panya Bistro: A holiday preview party will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ala Moana Center cafe. Samples will be offered of the bakery's holiday pastries, from Christmas cakes and cookies to stollens, along with tastings from the catering menus. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
