The Kahuku girls earned their ticket to Maui by taking Lady Raiders coach Mona Ah-Hoy's game plan from the chalkboard to the hardwood, defeating Waipahu 25-10, 25-10 last night at Pearl City High School.
The girls state tournament will be held at King Kekaulike High School in Pukalani from Nov. 10-13.
With a few extra days of practice and preparation, thanks to a first-round bye as the second seed in the OIA East Division, Kahuku (11-1) sought to serve aggressively at Waipahu's (8-3) top two offensive threats in Amanda and Samantha Misa.
"I'm really proud of the girls," Ah-Hoy said. "We wanted to serve the two sisters and get them out of their game and we were able to do that."
Helping Kahuku follow Ah-Hoy's game plan was setter and floor leader Sachi Mamizuka. The 5-foot-5 senior used her jump-float serve to post a match-high four aces, including three during a Kahuku seven-point run to open the second game.
"We wanted to go into tonight's game serving well and showing some ball control," Mamizuka said. "We wanted to serve the sisters and make them work. We also knew that coach wanted us to play under control. If the set wasn't there, we wanted to place balls instead of wasting swings."
With setters Mamizuka and Leeann Mapu combining for 25 assists, the 2002 state champions did not waste many swings, committing only five attack errors the entire night.
"I think that Leeann and myself mixed it up pretty good," Mamizuka said. "We were able to stay consistent and our offense played great tonight."
Leading Kahuku's attack was Camilla Ah-Hoy, who had a match-high 10 kills.
No. 6 Kalani def. Pearl City: In the nightcap of the OIA tourney doubleheader, the host Chargers (9-2) fell 25-18, 25-15 to East third seed Kalani behind a dominant performance from all-state talent Tamari Miyashiro.
Miyashiro was all over the court as usual, tallying a match-high 15 kills while also posting five digs, an assist and a solo block.
The victory propels Kalani into the state tournament and the OIA tournament semifinals, where they will meet East regular season champion Moanalua (11-1). That contest will also be held at McKinley High School tomorrow.
