SUV registrations jump 69 percentThe number of sport utility vehicles registered in Hawaii grew by 69 percent from 1997-2002, but island residents still love their pickup trucks, according to a report from the Census Bureau released yesterday.SUV registrations in Hawaii jumped from 64,400 to 108,500 over the five-year period, according to the Census Bureau's 2002 Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey. Despite the increase, SUVs still trail the number of pickup trucks in the islands. There were 157,900 pickups registered in 2002, 9.5 percent more than the 144,200 registered in 1997, the report found. By contrast, there were 53,200 minivans registered in 2002, only 4.3 percent more than the 51,000 minivans in 1997, the report said.
