Hawaii golfers 13th at Barona Collegiate Cup

The Hawaii men's golf team shot an even-par 288 yesterday to finish the Barona Collegiate Cup 4 over and in 13th place.

BYU ran away with the team standings, finishing 42 under. Denver and Texas A&M were 21 strokes back.

Ben Douglas shot a 4-under 68 on the final day to lead all UH individual scorers, finishing in a tie for 21st place.

Rainbow Wahine in 15th place: The Rainbow Wahine finished the first day of the Kent Youel Invitational in 15th place at Kapolei Golf Course yesterday.

Dale Gammie led Hawaii with a 73-77--150, good enough for a tie for 22nd place.

Waiakea alumnus Leah Whiting shot 71-77--148 to lead Oregon State. She finished yesterday's action tied for 13th place overall.

UCLA leads the team standings at 8 under, 16 strokes better than Arizona State.

The action concludes today.

Matsuyoshi wins Otter Invitational: At Seaside, Calif., Hawaii-Hilo freshman Kiilani Matsuyoshi won the individual title at The Golf Mart/Lady Otter Invitational yesterday at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Matsuyoshi shot 79-76--155 over the two-day tournament, but had to win a playoff with Sacramento State's Margaux Sheehan to take the honor.

Matsuyoshi's UHH teammate Mineko Kanamoto finished in a tie for 25th to help the Vulcans finish sixth in a field of 25 teams.

Defending champs advance in 4-Ball tourney: Defending champions Andrew Feldman and Larry Stubblefield were among the teams advancing yesterday to the semifinals of the Aloha Section PGA's 2004 Golf Concepts/E-Z-Go 4-Ball Match Play Championship at the Oahu Country Club.

Kevin Hayashi and Jay Taise, Ron Castillo Jr. and Wade Nishimoto, and Shane Abe and Dave Eichelberger also advanced to today's semifinals. Feldman-Stubblefield will face Hayashi-Taise and Castillo-Nishimoto meets Abe-Eichelberger.

The finals are set for today at 11:30 a.m.

Sea Warriors No. 14, 'Swords No. 21 in poll

Hawaii Pacific remains No. 14 and Chaminade is No. 21 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25.

The Sea Warriors are stuck in their lowest ranking of the season despite going 3-0 on a road trip last week.

The Silverswords are ranked No. 5 on the Pacific Region Poll and HPU is No. 6. The two teams are tied for first place in the Pacific West Conference.
