Reserve imu spot nowIf a kalua turkey is your idea of the best way to celebrate Thanksgiving, reserve space in Kailua High School's community imu.It works like this: Pack an aluminum baking tray with thawed, seasoned items and wrap well in foil. Pork butt and whole turkeys are popular, as well as sweet potatoes, luau leaf and taro. Bring the food to the school from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 24 and come back Thanksgiving morning to pick it up. Cost is $10 per tray to benefit school athletic programs. Reservations must be made by Nov. 12. To secure your spot, mail checks made out to Kalua High School, attention Mel Imai, 451 Ulumanu Drive, Kailua 96734. Write the word IMU in the lower left corner of the envelope. Include a stamped, addressed return envelope, to be used to send your confirmation ticket. Include a telephone number. For information call Todd Hendricks, 728-7389.
KCC market celebratesThe Saturday Farmers' Market at Kapiolani Community College celebrates Halloween this weekend, offering pumpkins for sale and baked treats for children who arrive in costume.KCC students will demonstrate how to carve pumpkins. Also this weekend, the Master Gardeners -- plant doctors from the University of Hawaii Extension Service -- will be on hand to answer questions about plants, soil and insects. Breakfast of pancakes with fruit compote and corned beef hash and eggs will be served by Joe Aloha Catering. The farmers' market is held 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays in KCC's Diamond Head parking lot. Call the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation, 848-2074.
Taro stars on KauaiThe Kauai Taro Growers Association pays tribute to Hawaii's staple starch on Saturday at Waioli Park in Hanalei.The Kauai Taro Festival will include food booths (each must sell at least one taro product), a taro cooking contest, a country store featuring taro foods, poi-pounding demonstrations and entertainment.
