‘Tides’ includes gay
Navy commander

"Tides of War," a $3 million combat-action drama starring Adrian Paul, is halfway through three weeks of production on Oahu. Paul portrays gay naval submarine commander Burt Habley of the USS Santa Maria on a covert mission in North Korean waters. In the script, Habley is described as a "tough veteran of the fleet." He's having an affair with the male executive officer of the sub, Tom Palatonio (Mathew St. Patrick of "Six Feet Under").

The film also features Catherine Dent ("The Shield" and "Taken") who plays Lt. Claire Trifoli, a U.S. intelligence agent and Palatonio's sister. Paul starred as Duncan MacLeod in six seasons of "Highlander: The Series," then on the big screen in "Highlander: Endgame."

The story centers around a naval confrontation with North Korea and a potential nuclear war. The Hawaii-based Pacific Films' production is produced and directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith ("D.C. 9/11: Time of Crisis"). Most of the scenes are being filmed on a set designed as the sub's interior. Some of the exterior scenes are taking place at the deep draft harbor at Barbers Point.

A premium cable service, to feature movies and series aimed towards gay and lesbian viewers, greenlit "Tides of War." Screenwriter Mark Sanderson ("The Stand-Up," the MTV dating series "Singled Out," and co-writer for Regent Entertainment's pilot "Closed Circuit TV" for Showtime Networks) also appears in "Tides" as the sub's communications officer ...

Tom Cruise's cousin, William Mapother, will do two episodes of ABC's "Lost," though it's not clear if the actor will play one of the unidentified castaways, or be featured in one of the show's flashback segments.

The series' breakout star Evangeline Lilly is one of four actors being considered for the Lois Lane role in the next "Superman" film.

Writer/producer Carlton Cuse ("Nash Bridges" and "Martial Law") has come aboard "Lost" as an executive producer, alongside J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk.

Starting with tonight's "Lost," every episode will be 61 minutes long, beginning at 7 p.m. and ending at 8:01 p.m. ...

Vincent Spano ("Prince Street") is set for a multi-episode appearance on Fox's "North Shore," playing an eccentric millionaire ...

Stay tuned for an announcement in two weeks about another TV series -- not just a pilot episode -- to be filmed in Hawaii ...
