Hawaii players play
big role at Bethel

The Bethel College (Mishawaka, Ind.) Pilots entered the quarterfinal round of the Mid-Central Collegiate Conference postseason tournament yesterday hoping their Hawaii players continued to be as offensive as they have in compiling an 11-5-1 regular-season record.

Hawaii players account for 79 percent (41 of 52) of the Pilots' goals and 61 percent (20 of 33) of their assists.

Sophomore striker Lisa Franke (Kealakehe) leads the way with 19 goals and 10 assists. Freshman striker JoBette Nabarro (Waiakea), who transferred to Bethel after a year at San Diego State, is right behind with 16 goals and three assists.

The bad news is No. 6 seed Huntington stunned the No. 3-seeded Pilots 2-0 yesterday.

Mayumi Stevens, captain for the second year, has four goals and one assist. The senior midfielder from Moanalua, started her career at Bethel playing basketball before switching to soccer last year.

"Mayumi is extremely quick with her first step. She is not a burner, but is a tireless defender who goes all day. I don't think she has been out of a game for the past six weeks," said Bethel coach Pete Morey.

"Mayumi isn't vocal, but leads by example. She works hard every day. She is not big, but she is tough."

Maile Carenio (Waiakea), a senior left back, has three assists. Her twin sister, Malia, a junior from Waiakea who plays right back, has one assist.

"Maile has a quiet, unassuming personality but is a very tough competitor. She does not give a quarter to anyone at all and does a good job of tracking people down," said Morey.

"I want to keep Hawaii players coming here. It seems to be a good fit for them academically, socially and athletically. I am very impressed with the skills of the Hawaiian players."

More successes

Jen Loo is doing her part to help the Idaho State women's soccer team qualify for the Big Sky Conference tournament. The sophomore defender from Mililani assisted on the goal Thursday as ISU beat Sacramento State 1-0, then scored the first goal in a 2-1 comeback win over Portland State on Saturday.

The Bengals (7-5-3, 2-2-1) need to beat host Northern Arizona on Saturday to qualify.

Loo is tied for the ISU scoring lead with three goals and four assists for 10 points.

Kalei Titcomb had quite a weekend last week for the Pacific University women's team in Northwest Conference action.

The senior midfielder from Kamehameha converted a penalty kick at 80:45 to give Pacific a 1-1 tie with nationally ranked Whitworth (10-3-1) on Oct. 16. The next day Titcomb was successful on another penalty kick at 88:27 as the Boxers (4-7-1) edged Whitman 1-0.

However, in the Oct. 16 doubleheader at Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.), the Whitworth men (10-2-1) defeated the Boxers 2-1 when Kenshiro Uki, a freshman midfielder from Pearl City, scored his first goal of the season in overtime at 108:21.

Christian Marston has scored two goals and assisted on three others for 13-4-0 Vanguard University, an NAIA school in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The sophomore midfielder from Kapaa has started 12 of 17 matches. He scored the game-winner in a 6-0 victory over Hope International on Oct. 9.
