Seasiders sweep PacWest cross country

Brigham Young University-Hawaii runners Jeremy Van Tress and Chelsea Smith took first place at the Pacific West Conference Cross Country Championships yesterday in Billings, Mont.

The Seasiders also won the team titles, the men with 33 points and the women with 34.

Smith, the defending NCAA Division II National Champion, set a new course and school record in winning five-kilometer race, demolishing the old record of 18:04 by posting a time of 16:57. The Seasiders' Diana Choi came in fourth in 19:13, followed by Jennifer Puzey in eight and Melissa Flake in ninth.

Wahine fall to Stanford in swim meet

The Stanford women's swimming and diving team defeated Hawaii 180-120 yesterday in a dual meet at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center.

UH's Melanie Schlanger won the 50 free and 100 free, meeting NCAA B-standard qualifying times in both events.

Sophomore Nicole Mackey won the 100 back with a NCAA B-standard time and also came first in the 200 back.

In diving, UH's QiongJie Huang won both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events and posted NCAA Zone qualifying scores in both events.

Football coaches spread out to discuss win

Hawaii football coach June Jones will present film analysis of last night's home win over San Jose tomorrow at the weekly meeting of the Na Koa Football Club.

Jones and an assistant will also preview next Friday's clash with Boise State in Idaho.

The event begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center and costs $13 for members and $15 for guests.

Defensive line coach Vantz Singletary and special teams coach Mouse Davis will be speaking at the Honolulu Quarterback Club's weekly meeting at the Pagoda Ballroom.

Local sports promoter and media personality Tau Harrington will join the coaches at the podium.

Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. with the program to follow at noon.

New Mexico duo leads Waikoloa Challenge

Mika Tari and Venetta Grace of New Mexico teamed up to shoot a 60 and lead the first round of the Waikoloa Women's Golf Challenge yesterday on the Big Island.

Cindy Gray of Kona and Gloria Rice of Laupahoehoe are in second at 62 followed by Cher Guerriero of Waikoloa and Lynn Skallerud of Minn. with a 63.

The final round will be held today on the Waikoloa Beach Course.
