Dole chief's son dies in car crash on L.A. freeway

David Howard Murdock II, son of the chairman of Dole Food Co., was killed early yesterday in a car crash in Los Angeles, officials said.

Murdock, 36, of Los Angeles died when his 2003 Ferrari left the Santa Monica Freeway about 2:30 a.m. and crashed into some trees, California Highway Patrol Officer Shameil Coleman said.

A female passenger survived the crash.

Murdock's family issued a statement requesting privacy following "the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother."

"We are deeply saddened and would appreciate if the public and press understand our need for privacy during this difficult time," the statement said.

Murdock's father, David Howard Murdock, took the Westlake Village, Calif.-based Dole private last year. The company was founded in Hawaii in 1851 and remains one of Hawaii's largest landowners.

The elder Murdock was No. 140 last year on the Forbes 400 list of the world's richest people with a net worth of $1.5 billion.
