Seasiders ranked 20thThe BYU-Hawaii men's basketball team will open the 2004-2005 season ranked 20th according to the first Division II Bulletin poll released this week. This is the Seasiders first preseason ranking since becoming a Division II school.The Seasiders return four starters from last year's team that went 23-6, including reigning Pacific West Conference player of the year Jake Chrisman, who averaged 23.3 points per game last season as a junior. The Seasiders open this season Nov. 5th against BYU-Provo on the road.
Sea Warriors sweep AntelopesThe Hawaii Pacific volleyball team completed a perfect road trip with a 30-18, 30-23, 30-13 sweep of Grand Canyon yesterday.Flavia Brakling and Nadica Karleusa each had 13 kills to lead the Sea Warriors while Barbara Martin added nine kills and five digs while hitting .533. The Sea Warriors improved to 16-2 and will next face BYU-Hawaii at the Blaisdell Arena Nov. 2.
WAC tournament tickets to go on saleTickets for the 2004 WAC volleyball tournament at the Virginia Street Gym on the campus of the University of Nevada will go on sale Nov. 1.Ticket prices will be $30 for adults and $15 for children and can be purchased by calling the University of Nevada ticket office at 775-348-7225. The tournament will take place Nov. 19-21 and will feature the conference's top eight teams.
Curtis goes undefeated for WahineSenior Kimberly Curtis was the only Wahine to win both matches and advance to the Round of 64 in the Wilson/ITA Western Tennis Regional in San Diego yesterday.Julia Sandborn won a feed-in match over Pepperdine's Vanessa Dunlap 8-5 to place eight Wahine into the qualifying rounds of the tournament, but Curtis was the only Wahine to advance. She will play UNLV's Cindy Trebor beginning at 7 a.m. today while the rest of the Wahine play in back-draw matches.
Honolulu Masters Swimposium coming upThe Oahu Club will put on the Honolulu Masters Swimposium and Super Swim Challenge Oct. 30-31.The Swimposium will take place in two parts -- a program that includes former Olympians, coaches, stroke analysts and an author; and a swim clinic that will include pool and instruction with experts, including Rowdy Gaines. Swimposium registration is $10. The Super Swim Challenge will be United States Masters Swimming sanctioned competition. There will also be a special exhibition relay, in which entrants can sign up to swim on a team with an Olympian. The Super Swim is $30. For information, inquire at the Oahu Club, or call 395-3300.
