ALREADY LINING UPWalter Dods will remain chairman of BancWestWalter Dods, who will retire at the end of the year as chief executive of First Hawaiian Bank parent BancWest Corp., has been appointed by BancWest's board to be nonexecutive chairman effective Jan. 1.The 63-year-old Dods, who has been chairman and CEO, is ending a 36-year career with the company and won't be an employee anymore. As part of executive and board changes announced in April, Don McGrath will become CEO in addition to his current role as president at BancWest and take the position of chairman of the BancWest board's executive committee. McGrath will remain president and CEO of Bank of the West, a BancWest subsidiary. Don Horner, president and chief operating officer of First Hawaiian Bank, will succeed Dods as CEO of First Hawaiian. Horner and Frank Bonetto, vice chairman of the regional banking group at Bank of the West, also will become directors of BancWest.
BBB warns about travel offerThe Better Business Bureau is warning about a company, Vacation Properties International, that offers a $1,995 travel package to Hawaii, but faces complaints from consumers who have not received their airline tickets as promised.Those customers have complained to the bureau that they have not been able to reach the company either by telephone or by a local mailing address provided to them. The bureau warns about doing business with an unfamiliar company and recommends being wary of low-priced offers that may be too good to be true.
Wimberly, Belt Collins make listArchitecture firm Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo and consulting firm Belt Collins have made the Engineering News-Record's Top 200 list of international design firms.Wimberly and Belt Collins were 102 and 113, respectively, on the list, which is based on the design revenue of projects completed outside the home country of each company. Engineering News-Record is a weekly business journal for the construction industry.
New Daiei president will lead restructuringDaiei Inc., a Japanese retailer seeking government bailout, named Managing Director Toshio Hasumi president to replace Kunio Takagi, effective today.Takagi, 60, who announced last week he would step down today, was named chairman, the Kobe-based company said in a press release distributed through the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Hasumi, 58, joined the company in 1969 and will lead restructuring efforts at Japan's third-largest retailer, which has about $9.3 billion in debt. He will be responsible for overseeing the loading and unloading of barges at the port. He will be responsible for assisting in the environmental compliance, management and use of company lands. He previously served as the Maui district land agent with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
PROMOTIONS» The U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has appointed James Puupai Kauahikaua as scientist-in-charge. He began his professional earth science career as a USGS minority intern in 1976 in Denver. He replaces Don Swanson, who will rotate back to full-time research at the observatory.
