Modesto Gaborno
becomes OCC’s
first Filipino president
Oahu Country Club honored Modesto "Mo" Gaborno at the club's President's Ball Saturday night. Mo, a retired engineer, is the first Filipino to hold the club's presidency. If there ever was a Golfers Anonymous organization for non-pro golfers, Modesto, 65, would be president of that, too, because he admits to playing 240 rounds last year. Chef Glenn Nitta and his staff served delicious steak and lobster tail for dinner and included Filipino favorites. Kit Samson, originally from the Philippines, and his Sound Advice were hot, playing pops, swing and rock music for dancers. They also played "Dahil Sa Iyo" for Mo and his wife, Elena. Elena worked with the chef and other members of club G.M. Loren Pippin's staff on the successful party. Kit's tight group is made up of Alfredo Romero on bass and vocals, and drummer Butch Nicolas. Crowd jams Halekulani food and wine event
That Masters of the Palate event drew a huge crowd at the Halekulani Friday. A dozen past and present Halekulani chefs and two wine experts worked food and wine stations in the benefit for the Culinary Institute of the Pacific and Leeward and Kapiolani Community Colleges. Mixologist
Dale DeGroff prepared special drinks and
Ivy Nagayama and
Mark Shishido returned "home" to assist with beverage service. Bassist
Bruce Hamada, pianist
Jim Howard and drummer
Darryl Pellegrini knocked out familiar tunes. Bruce's vocals, many from the
Sinatra songbook, were frosting on the musical cake. Hotel G.M.
Fred Honda introduced former Halekulani Corp. CEO and President
Shuhei Okuda and the corporation's present chief,
Peter Shaindlin. The last time I talked with Shuhei, he had two holes-in-one to his credit; now he has four. Neurosurgeon
Robert Ho, a former islander, and wife
Edie, of Pleasant Ridge, Mich., were among guests. Robert is a second cousin of
Don Ho and said his brother,
Ron Ho, owns Fisher Hawaii. Robert graduated from Roosevelt after transferring from Punahou. The second thing I like about Robert is that he delivered the Star-Bulletin as a kid ...
Emme Tomimbang's 10th anniversary show, "Island to Island Moments," airs on KHON/NBC from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday and again Nov. 7 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. ...
