Brakling garners PacWest honorsHawaii Pacific's Flavia Brakling was named PacWest player of the week yesterday for the second time in her career.The junior amassed 36 kills and 31 digs in two matches this week against Montana State-Billings. She ranks fifth in the conference in kills per game (4.28) and hitting percentage (.312) and is tied for sixth in digs per game at 3.0.
Higa honored by Atlantic-10Richie Higa was named the Atlantic-10 Conference's men's soccer player of the week yesterday after playing a key role in the Massachusetts Minutemen's overtime road victories at Dayton and Xavier last week.The sophomore midfielder from Mid-Pacific Institute scored the second goal in a 3-2 win over Dayton. He scored twice against Xavier, with his second goal at 89:44 tying the score a 3-3 in a match UMass (6-6-2 overall, 3-1-2 league) won in overtime 4-3. The goals came on the only shots Higa took. He now has four goals and one assist for nine points, third-best on the team.
WAC to add two in swimming and divingThe Western Athletic Conference announced yesterday that the University of San Diego and Northern Arizona accepted invitations for affiliate memberships to compete in swimming and diving effective for the 2004-05 season.The WAC championship is scheduled for Feb. 23-25 at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio.
Ogoshi makes it two in a rowHofstra freshman setter Shellane Ogashi received her second straight rookie of the week award after posting a career-high 64 assists against George Mason.Against two of the top teams in the conference, Ogashi's setting led to the Tigers' .310 hitting percentage for the week. They've won six straight matches and are 15-1 overall.
Warriors struggle in NevadaThe University of Hawaii men's golf team struggled to a first-day 17th-place finish at the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nev.Sophomore Cody Wolfenbarger was the Warriors' best finisher, shooting back-to-back rounds of 75 to sit in a tie for 50th with a 150. Lamar University leads the 18-team field by seven strokes over Oregon State, while Lamar's Dawie VanDerWalt, Oregon State's Ryan Gilmour and Denver's Charlie Soule are tied for the individual lead with 5-under 139s. McGarry takes first-round lead Russ McGarry fired a 1-over 72 to take a one-shot lead in the first round of the Oahu Country Club Senior Men's Invitational yesterday. George Yamamoto trails McGarry by one shot as players struggled all day dealing with the 20 mph winds and lightning fast greens. Former champions Wendell Kop, Art Costas and Dick Palma shot 4-over 75s.
