Isle stars
shine at Hawaiian
Airlines party

I KNOW you're familiar with the phrase "lucky you live Hawaii." Last weekend, however, it was more like "lucky you work Hawaiian" for the 3,000 employees at Hawaiian Airlines.

In celebration of the company's 75th anniversary, employees and their families were invited to a private concert at the Waikiki Shell. Among the performers on stage Saturday night: O'Brian Eselu with Halau Ke Kai o Kahiki, Kapena, Aunty Genoa Keawe, the Makaha Sons, Maunalua and Na Palapalai ...

LAST WEEK was quite a blast from the past, starting with the first annual "Hip-Hop Honors" on VH-1 on Oct. 11.

Rap pioneers Run-DMC, the Sugarhill Gang and DJs Kool Herc and Hollywood were honored, as was the underground graffitti movement of the '80s and the late Tupac Shakur.

It was also pretty cool to see Doug E. Fresh and Grandmaster Flash teaming up during the program, and both Kid Capri and Kid Rock impressed the audience with their turntable skills. But where was the West Coast? Where was the 2 Live Crew? Where was the tribute to Biggie Smalls?

Hopefully the second annual "Hip-Hop Honors" will pay tribute to some of the acts VH-1 slept on this year ...

THE FLASHBACKS continued last Tuesday, as All-4-One made a special appearance in Honolulu at Rumours Nightclub.

Yes, the Grammy Award-winning group performed favorites like "I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That," but it was also interesting to hear some of what Tony Borowiak, Jamie Jones, Delious Kennedy and Alfred Nevarez have up their sleeves for the upcoming album, "Split Personality."

Also in the crowd at Rumours: 102.7 Da Bomb's Sam the Man and Paul Ogata, Lite 94.7's Mandy in the Morning and promoter Tom Moffatt ...

FORMER Hawaii resident DJ Denovo wraps up his return visit to the islands tonight during "Pussycat Lounge" at the Wave Waikiki. He'll be joined by DJ Abnormal, who is also one of the members of Fredalba, the band with frontman Eric Balfour (of "Hawaii" fame). This might be one of your last opportunities to see Abnormal in Honolulu, since NBC recently pulled Balfour's show off the air ...

AFTER taking some time off when school started this fall, Indigo has brought back its weekly old-school party on Wednesday nights.

Now called "Instant Vintage," the night still features the Architechs' DJ Delve and members of the Nocturnal Sound Krew. According to Indigo promotions manager Bryan Lew, you can also expect a "wider range of music" than what was played during the party's original run during the summer ...
