Carney transferring to UH

Sean Carney, an all-state setter at Iolani School, has decided to transfer to Hawaii from Lewis University.

Also transferring from Lewis to UH will be 6-6 hitter Jon Bergmann from Clovis, Calif. Punahou's Mikey China, a 5-10 freshman defensive specialist, will remain at Lewis to play under new coach Dan Friend.

Lewis has decided to sanction itself in light of various allegations of recruiting violations, including vacating the 2003 national title.

Carney will be vying for the starting setter position with sophomore Brian Beckwith and senior Daniel Rasay. The Warriors open the preseason with an intrasquad scrimmage Oct. 30 at 10 a.m., followed by the annual Inter-Island Fall Preview Tour against Pacific Nov. 17 at the Stan Sheriff Center, Nov. 18 in Hilo, Nov. 19 on Molokai and Nov. 20 on Kauai.
